Academic integrity is defined as “The expectation that teachers, students, researchers, and all members of the academic community act with honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility”. (TEQSA)

Due to the advancement of the digital age, violating these aspects without consequence has become easier, but the opposite is also true. It has become much easier to uphold academic integrity due to the advancements in the ed-tech sector.

Today, we will look at a few tools and technologies that help to promote academic integrity (especially in students). These tools not only facilitate catching cheating behaviour but also help people to stay honest, and responsible in perfectly legal ways.

How Ed-Tech promote academic integrity

1). Plagiarism checkers discourage cheating

First on our list of ed-tech tools is the plagiarism checker. A plagiarism checker is a tool that can scan and analyze the input text and determine whether it is plagiarism or not. This type of tool is useful for both the people who are creating the work and the people who are checking it.

A common example would be that of students and teachers. Students have to create assignments while teachers have to check them. Using plagiarism checkers on the teacher’s side discourages students from committing plagiarism. The fear of repercussions will motivate the students to stay away from plagiarism, thereby upholding academic integrity.

On the other hand, students can use the very same plagiarism checker free of cost to check whether their assignments have plagiarism or not. This is necessary because students can unknowingly commit plagiarism without knowing it. By using a plagiarism checker, they can ensure that they are not violating the tenets of academic integrity. It helps them to detect accidental plagiarism in their work and remove it, therefore, helping them to uphold academic integrity.

2). Citation generators encourage honesty

Citations and references are the most important part of academic write-ups. They are used to give credit to the original authors of any content that the academic uses in their work. Failure to cite information is against academic integrity because it is dishonest and irresponsible and shows that the writer does not respect other people’s work.

Failure to cite usually occurs due to a few reasons.

  • The writer forgot to cite.
  • The writer tried to cite but did it incorrectly.
  • The writer did not realize they had to cite some information.

This is where ed-tech tools like citation generators can help. Writers who do not know how to cite properly can input their sources into a citation generator, and the tool will generate correct citations in multiple styles.

You can find citation generators as standalone tools or as part of word processors. They take away much of the tedium of generating a citation and reference list. Of course, this only helps people who are citing incorrectly. For the people who do not even realize they need to cite something, they have to use a plagiarism checker first and a citation generator afterwards.

3). Rewording tools help avoid verbatim plagiarism

This point may feel redundant, but it is not so. Not all types of plagiarism can be fixed by citing sources. A large part of accidental plagiarism is due to near-verbatim copying of public domain content. In this case, citing the source is not helpful, because the source is public domain, which does not require citing.

The only solution to remove this kind of plagiarism is to reword the content completely. By rewording the passages that are too similar, writers can make them look different but still have the same meaning.

Naturally, they have to use a plagiarism checker first to determine whether such plagiarism is in their work or not. However, once that is detected, writers can use a rewording tool to change the offending text automatically. Hence, by facilitating the editing process to remove plagiarism, rewording tools promote academic integrity.

So, in summary, various ed-tech tools promote academic integrity by making it easy not to cheat. They enable people to check whether their work contains signs of cheating as well as remove such signs if they are there. We saw how the worst offender of violating academic -integrity–plagiarism– can be caught by using tools, as well as removed by using tools. So, use these tools in your academic writing and ensure that you uphold academic integrity.
