Have you ever looked at a message from a colleague, and wondered what “Sorry, I’m IAM right now.” could possibly mean?

These days, modern businesses regularly utilise abbreviations as a form of shorthand, to deliver messages clearly and concisely. And whilst it can be easy to become overwhelmed, once you have the know how, they will become a useful tool for you in any business.

What is an abbreviation, and why do we use them?

An abbreviation is the name given to a phrase which has been condensed down to only the first letters of each word. It is common for companies to use this method as a way of making their name more memorable and easy to say.

A good example of this is the National Heath Service, or as it is more commonly known – the NHS.

Similarly in business, abbreviations are used to replace commonly said phrases. Some of these you will recognise, as we we often use them in our everyday lives. Consider a situation where you are asked to complete a form and fill in your DoB- many of us will recognise this acronym to mean “date of birth”.

This course will teach you all you need to know about abbreviations specific to the professional business environment, as well as examples of how to use them effectively to help you become a more effective communicator.
