CALEDONIAN LANGUAGE SCHOOL LTD
A small school with friendly, professional teachers, who are interested in learners and learning.
The Caledonian Language School in central Edinburgh is a small school with friendly, professional teachers, who are interested in learners and learning. This means that the focus is on helping students to progress to the best of their ability. Students want different things from a course: some want to get IELTS 6.5 for university entry, others want to improve their general fluency; Caledonian teachers will help you to achieve your aims.
How do we do this? We give students help and support with all sorts of problems. If you are comfortable in your life in Edinburgh, you will study better, so we want to help you to enjoy life here.
The Caledonian’s main courses are offered in periods or terms of 8 weeks from September to June, but it is possible to study for just 3 weeks or a whole year. The 8-week terms allow students to experience living in Edinburgh outside the busy tourist season, and give them time to see real progress in their English level. Our basic course is the 16-hour full-time General English Course, but you can customise it by adding extra communication classes (Intensive, 20 hours per week), or an examination preparation class for IELTS or Cambridge First Certificate. Caledonian teachers encourage students to continue studying outside class by giving regular homework, and directing students to our self-access materials, especially useful for exam entrants.
We organise host family accommodation with local families living in residential areas in Edinburgh. This gives you the opportunity to speak English with your hosts, and to learn more about British culture. However, some students prefer to find their own accommodation independently in a shared flat, or renting with a group of friends. Others like the casual hostel atmosphere, and actually stay in a hostel for the full 8 weeks, often doing some part-time work there in return for accommodation.
The best advertisement for the Caledonian Language School is its students. As many as 30% come back for a second or even third or fourth course with us, some staying all year. And they are successful, with many going on to work or study in the UK or other English-speaking countries: an architect in Canada, a project manager in Edinburgh, a pharmacist in Glasgow, to name a few.
