Effective CCQs and Elicitation Techniques in the Classroom
‘Do you understand? Is this clear?’, we all know that this is not an effective way to check our learners’ understanding, however, most of us have asked this question before! Why? One reason is that Concept Checking Questions (CCQs) can be tricky to formulate, especially when we have to think of them on the spot! In this workshop, we will look at how to go about writing effective CCQs to check our learners’ understanding.
We will mostly focus on checking meaning for lexical items and functional exponents. We will also talk about elicitation in the classroom, what it is, how to do it, and why it is essential to maintaining a high level of learner engagement in our lessons. By the end of this workshop, it is hoped you will feel more confident asking CCQS and eliciting from your learners.
