Introduction

Functional language provides learners with communicatively useful expressions that they can use for everyday life, therefore we believe that functional language should form an important part of any teaching syllabus.

In this workshop we will look at some examples of functional language and will discuss why it can be very effective when helping to prepare our learners for real-world communication.

We will explore the nature of functional language and look at how we can use the PPP model to teach it. We will also look at why teachers should highlight intonation and stress patterns when teaching functional language and suggest ways in which to do this in lessons.
