Teaching Stress & Intonation
Intonation relates to the ‘music’ in our voices when we speak. Speech recognition techniques have come a long way in recent years, but there is still that tell-tale robotic-ness that gives a computer away! Humans use a variety of rhythm, volume, tone and pitch when we speak to show interest, express some emotions and ask questions. Students from different countries may not be aware that the intonation present (or absent) in their language is likely to be very different from that of the language they are trying to learn – English in this case.
Wanting ‘to improve my pronunciation’ is often very high on students’ lists of goals. This workshop will raise your awareness of intonation and provide a couple of practical tips about how you can address it with your class.
