KeymasterHave a quick think about the reflective questions below in order to get the most out of the workshop:
1. What can I do if my students have misunderstood my question?
2. Is there any rule about who to ask questions to, in class?
3. I feel my questions are very boring – what can you suggest?
4. Discovery questions really slow my lesson down – is there any way to speed things up? - 29th May 2022 at 10:29 pm #361582

Participant1. If your students misunderstood your question, you should try asking him in some other way, like changing a few words in your question or taking recourse to a picture or diagram.

ParticipantFirst of all I would listen to him/her patiently about the problem the student was facing. Then I will appreciate the child’s boldness that the student stood up and said that he could not understand. After that I would apply any easier method of explaining the problem. If the student still can’t understand then I will ask him to meet me after class. First of all I would talk to him about his personal matters to make him realize that there is no distance between him and me . He can come and ask n no. of times about his problem, I will explain. I have seen by applying this method the students understand very fast and pay attention in studies

ParticipantAs teacher, if the students couldn’t understand our questions, we should rephrase it or give them the idea to think to make a collaborative and contributive learning. If the students could never and failed to understand our question again, so we need to exert more effort to give or make a resourceful and effective ways in questioning. By that, we would know of which part or aspect we were lacking and missing in times of questioning our students.

ParticipantAsking concept questions during the lesson is very helpful in understanding where my students are in the learning process and what my next step is in teaching them.

Participant1. If my students misunderstood my question, I should paraphrase it in a simpler way. Another way is;
I ask a serious of questions that lead them to answer my question.2. There are no rules about who to ask my questions to. I should include all my students even if I know it will take more time.
3.I should relate my questions to my student’s real life trying to make them interesting. I should start my questions with a very well-known ones that leads them to the others. So my students don’t feel bored or distracted.
4. I should think of situations that could guide my learners towards discovery.
In order to speed things up,I could ask my advanced questions to my strong learners in which there answers will lead to simpler questions to my weak learners or the opposite. So students themselves are guiding each others. - 20th February 2023 at 8:18 pm #391268

ParticipantI have a class of young learners having very different English levels, so it is hard for me to apply all your suggestions. I believe, the method of questions wouldn’t work for my class. I personally have to look something else to engage my students, for example, short video is OK, some simple game is OK, but the serious questions would be just disaster. I believe every teacher needs to adapt himself / herself to the particular group of students. One method maybe would be great for one class, but not effective for the another.
Thank you for your lecture.

ParticipantAsking Hots questions and Critical thinking questions is really a challenge but the use of 6 thinking hats made it a bit easier for me to formulate and have a structure of questions in my lessons.

ParticipantThese are some of the ways I usually go for.
1.Clarify the question, provide additional context, and encourage students to ask for further clarification if needed.
2. Generally, it’s best to ask questions to the entire class to promote inclusivity and engagement, but individual or small group questions can also be useful for specific purposes.
3. Add real-life scenarios, use thought-provoking prompts, or incorporate multimedia elements to make questions more engaging and interesting.
