Required from September 2021, a dynamic, highly motivated and talented English teacher to lead a large, well-resourced and flourishing department with an impressive record of success at A level and in Oxbridge entrance. This is a key role which would suit a creative, ambitious individual able to share his/her love of the English language and its literature for all age groups, and to enhance the girls’ education, through both curricular and extracurricular activities.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and committed teacher of English, with the demonstrable ability to meet the rewarding challenge of inspiring our able and highly motivated girls from Year 7 to Sixth Form, both inside and outside the classroom. S/he will be a graduate with at least a good honours degree, who has the flair and vision together with the necessary academic, educational and organisational experience to succeed in a post of this standing. S/he will have the talent and drive to contribute to the leadership of a strong team of specialist teachers, to initiate and develop innovative ideas and practices as well as to deal effectively with the administrative detail of the job. S/he will be committed to the welfare and individual development of all the pupils in his/her care.

The new Head of English will be expected to demonstrate a full commitment to school improvement, curriculum development, and cross-curricular as well as extra-curricular initiatives. S/he will have an informed interest in pedagogy. S/he will particularly work in collaboration with the Director of Theatre Studies, Speech and Drama to develop Oracy and the Expressive Arts in School. S/he will also work with the Librarian to promote reading.

The English Department is lively and energetic, as well as being committed to developing the girls’ confidence, creativity and enjoyment of Language, Literature, Oracy, Creative Writing, and Drama. In the Department the teachers value cooperation, a sense of humour, and a genuine interest in books, the theatre and related areas. The Department is always keen to embrace new and innovative extra-curricular initiatives and to celebrate (inter)national events such as World Book Day or National Poetry Day. Departmental meetings take place frequently and the Department benefits from a collaborative approach to the design and delivery of the curriculum.

An attractive salary and benefits package are available. Bolton School has its own salary scale. The remuneration for this post will be on a scale which in 2020/21 lies between £26,352 to £38,891 according to qualifications and experience, plus a Level 2 or Level 3 Management Allowance, according to experience. There is also an Upper Pay Scale from £40,713 to £43,779 for teachers who have worked for more than six years and have successfully crossed the threshold. These rates are reviewed annually. The school has a strong commitment to professional development. Teaching staff currently teach a maximum of 45 periods per fortnight (out of a timetable of 60 periods per cycle) and Heads of Department currently have an additional time allowance.

A thriving, academically selective School with 900 girls between Years 7-11, we are part of the Bolton School Foundation, sharing activities, expertise and a magnificent 32 acre campus with the Boys’ Division and offering pupils single sex education in a co-educational environment – ‘the best of both worlds’. The School is situated in an attractive, prosperous part of Bolton with easy access to some of the nation’s finest cities and countryside. In 2019 Bolton School was awarded the TES ‘Independent Senior School of the Year’ and ‘Independent School of the Year’. We are committed to increasing social mobility in our community: one in five of our pupils attends on a means-tested Bursary and Governors have a realistic aim to reach one in three by 2030. The pupil community reflects the ethnic diversity of the town of Bolton; the current teaching body is less diverse and there is a desire to improve this through new appointments to the staff body. Staff and pupils enjoy excellent relations and the atmosphere in School is warm, purposeful and fun. Parents are highly supportive. All teachers and girls receive an iPad and lessons have successfully continued throughout the pandemic via Zoom, thanks to the commitment of teaching colleagues and the engagement of the pupils. The Modern Languages Department has made particularly imaginative use of the iPad for language learning, whether at home or in School.

Closing date for applications: 9.00am on Friday 5 March 2021.

Interviews will be held week commencing 8 or 15 March

Bolton School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and to equality and diversity in all aspects of employment. The successful candidate will be required to undertake an Enhanced check for Regulated Activity.
