Learning Objective

Here is what you will learn in this course.

The Language Awareness and Grammar Course has been created to help you refresh or, perhaps, if you are a native speaker, for the first time in your life, learn about English grammar.

As a fluent speaker of the language, it is only natural to you to be grammatically correct, but how successfully do you think you could explain certain elements of English grammar to a learner?

Do you know, for instance, what the following word groups are called?

  • house, garden, apple
  • read, swim, run
  • blue, deep, big
  • and, in, on, between?

Or can you identify which tense is used in the following sentences?

  • My grandma lived in a small house.
  • I have always lived in this flat.
  • Ben is going to move into a skyscraper.

Once you’ve become a TEFL teacher, you will encounter questions like these. Therefore, the aim of this course is

  • to equip you with enough knowledge, so you can answer questions similar to the ones in the examples.
  • It is also to prepare you for the Teaching Grammar Course in our main TEFL Course, in which you will learn how to apply your knowledge of grammar to teaching it in a communicative way.

Even though the lessons are not inclusive of all you need to know as an English teacher, they will help you understand some of the most common grammar points, laying the foundations for your TEFL qualification.

In the course…

  • you will be introduced to the terminology used in the TEFL classroom
  • and you are going to learn about…
    • nouns
    • articles
    • verbs
    • tenses
    • modal verbs
    • conditionals
    • the passive voice
    • and question tags.

The tasks in the lessons are designed to be interactive. Through the application of Guided Discovery, information is elicited to engage you as the trainee teacher, as opposed to getting you to learn through reading lengthy texts. The same teaching and learning technique is used in the main TEFL course.

Please note that in the core modules, there will be no explicit grammar teaching, as the focus will be on how to present grammar to students. For that reason, we expect course participants to be familiar with the main concepts of the English grammar in order to be able to successfully complete the methodology course.

Therefore, even though it may not be compulsory, we still highly encourage you to complete the Language Awareness and Grammar course before you move onto the main TEFL course.

We hope you are going to enjoy this course and we are sure that by the time you get to the end of it, you’ll be able to make a better informed decision to take your learning to the next level and put your knowledge to good use by registering for our teaching methodology course.
