How to make learning objectives accessible to remote students
Remote learning is convenient and cheap, but the student misses the experience of being with the teacher in one space. This however does not take away the responsibility to meet all learning objectives set for the course.

Education administrators, teachers, and the student must work out a formula to ensure that these objectives are met. It is one of the strategies to ensure that remote learning does not disadvantage some of the students. It also prevents an institution and the tutor from releasing graduates with missing skills or experiences.
Understandably, it is impossible to create a learning environment similar to the class for a remote learner. The responsibility is to make the environment as close as possible or even better. Here are strategies to ensure that remote learning meets the educational objectives as though the student was in a physical class.
1). Use diverse presentation methods
The physical class is heavily dependent on the teacher. Students can engage and relate to the content easily because the teacher and the class are real. They can read body language besides watching expressions and listening to the voice. Remote learning takes the student away from the class. He does not see the teacher in full size because of using gadgets. The voice may also be distorted by the interface. All these intervening elements affect the ability of a student to understand the concepts taught. Diverse presentation methods will help.
Include videos and text in your presentation. Send the students to watch YouTube videos or follow lectures online. Let them examine images and write reports. Such methods of presentation are equalizing. They do not demarcate between students following the lecture live and those learning remotely. It is also one of the ways to engage the students instead of forcing them to listen to hours of lectures over gadgets.
2). Develop hand-on projects
The teacher is the main source of materials in a class setting. He demonstrates as the students watch. Remote learning makes it difficult for students to follow the presentations or experience what the tutor may be demonstrating. How about allowing the students to develop the projects or gather the learning resources?
Identify the materials you will need to actualize your lesson. Let each student gather the materials from his environment. It is one of the ways to ignite creativity. It results in diverse learning materials, making your class more engaging. The students continue to engage with your content beyond the class. Further, they will understand the concepts taught better because they were part of gathering the learning materials. A student can localize his learning, resulting in more creativity.
3). Your actions and expressions will help
Avoid lecturing while seated with only a visible head. Such a passport-photo view is monotonous. It makes for a boring class and could cause your students to sleep through the session. Make the class more engaging and exciting by using expressions.
Facial expressions and gestures make presentations more engaging. Change the tone of your voice from time to time based on the content. Stand, sit, walk around, and even disappear from the screen. Use a setting similar to the class but enhance it with videos and images. You create a learning environment that is similar to what students would find in class.
4). Utilize open educational resources
Learning resources are expensive and difficult to prepare. However, developers have provided an excellent resource for teachers to use during instructions. The materials are available free of charge and ready-made on the internet. You may download complete resource materials or use free tools to customize the materials you need for your lesson.
Send students to use the open-source learning materials. You avoid spending all your time on activities that are not within your core mandate. The free materials are also of a higher quality than you can prepare with your amateur skills. They make learning easier and more enjoyable for your students.
5). Be available for your students
The teacher is available in school all day during physical learning. Students can ask questions and get the materials they need to make their learning easier. Remote learning is different. The students have to rely on materials sent by the teacher. You communicate via the phone or email. Unfortunately, such remote channels can be unconvincing and inadequate for your students. It requires you to go the extra mile to make learning easier for your students as well.
Allow them to call any time or extend the normal hours up to a reasonable time. Let them send messages and call over video apps for consultation. It takes away anxiety over assignments. They feel your presence and concern about their academic work. It fills a void and the distance brought about by remote learning.
6). Use simulation technology
Class demonstrations are powerful when delivering a concept. Unfortunately, remote learning does not give room for such demonstrations. Demonstrations over camera might not capture the details you wish to demonstrate. Unfortunately, some of them cannot be repeated. Simulation technology will come to your rescue.
Virtual Reality technology is one of the best simulation options. You can simulate chemical reactions and even recreate events in history. You can alter the parameters of an experiment to see the effect. You can take the class on a tour of a historical site without spending a penny. Simulation technology provides an almost real experience.
7). Engage other educators
You have other teachers within your network. Utilize them to teach your class. A new face, a different voice, and new teaching methods make learning enjoyable. It provides the students with a different experience.
You may also send the students to follow live lectures from other institutions. Alternatively, let them utilize videos and learning materials by other teachers. The diversity makes the concepts easier to understand.
Creating a classroom experience for remote learners requires creativity. Prepare more engaging learning materials and use the available technology to make the class more enjoyable. Engage the students in building projects and preparing learning materials. Go out of your way to bridge the gap and fill the void brought about by remote learning.
