Introduction
‘Do you understand? Is this clear?’, we all know that this is not an effective way to check our learners’ understanding, however, most of us have asked this question before! Why? One reason is that Concept Checking Questions (CCQs) can be tricky to formulate, especially when we have to think of them on the spot! In this workshop, we will look at how to go about writing effective CCQs to check our learners’ understanding.
We will mostly focus on checking meaning for lexical items and functional exponents. We will also talk about elicitation in the classroom, what it is, how to do it, and why it is essential to maintaining a high level of learner engagement in our lessons. By the end of this session, it is hoped you will feel more confident asking CCQS and eliciting from your learners.

Preparing for the Workshop
Our Masterclass workshops are typically delivered in 90 mins.
At Gallery Teachers, we endorse the philosophy of building on your previous knowledge and experience as opposed to just imparting knowledge on you.
Therefore, in order to prepare you for the webinar and help you activate what you already know about the topic, we will suggest two to four reflective questions for you to consider before you join the event.
You will also be given the opportunity to post your reflections, along with any questions you may already have at the pre-watching stage, to the discussion forum.
The reflective questions, as well as ideas and shared experiences posted to the forum by attendees, will be used in the real-time Q&A session in order to generate an engaging and meaningful discussion, involving the presenter and teachers from around the world.
After the event, the forum discussion will take on a life of its own and teachers will be encouraged to continue posting their experiences, reflections and questions related to the topic of the webinar. So, if you feel strongly about the topic, we will make it possible for you to take the discussion beyond the scheduled workshop and continue sharing your ideas with like-minded teachers and teacher trainers from other countries

A useful pro-memoria
Useful to be able to review something I had taken for granted.
CCQs and Elicitation
This was a very insightful class. I was afraid it might overlap too much with Neil Harris’s class on CCQs and ICQs of a few weeks ago but I found them complementary. Her first suggestion to writing CCQs is to “go to the dictionary for key aspects of the language”. I’m not sure why this never occurred to me but it is great advice and has immensely improved my CCQs and saved me a lot of time in writing them. The discussion of elicitation was also very helpful and I highly recommend the class.

A Brilliant masterclass Sophie! Really enjoyable, very fluid and with great examples. A great deal to learn from it and to put into practice. Thank you ever so much. I highly recommend it.
