Introduction

In this workshop, we will go through how to get started with teaching literacy. We will discuss what challenges literacy learners face on a daily basis as well as challenges for educators. We will look at practical ways to simplify our language, both in terms of quality and quantity to help communication with our learners.

We will put ourselves in our learners’ shoes by practicing writing in several languages and we will examine where the difficulties lie in writing in a different script.

We will focus on the reading and writing sub-skills that we need to teach in the literacy classroom, and we will present various teaching activities that will help your learners develop their literacy skills.

By the end of this session, it is hoped you will feel more confident and enthused about teaching literacy.

This Workshop is included with PRO Membership.

Preparing for the Workshop

Our Masterclass workshops are typically delivered in 90 mins.

At Gallery Teachers, we endorse the philosophy of building on your previous knowledge and experience as opposed to just imparting knowledge on you.

Therefore, in order to prepare you for the webinar and help you activate what you already know about the topic, we will suggest two to four reflective questions for you to consider before you join the event.

You will also be given the opportunity to post your reflections, along with any questions you may already have at the pre-watching stage, to the discussion forum.

The reflective questions, as well as ideas and shared experiences posted to the forum by attendees, will be used in the real-time Q&A session in order to generate an engaging and meaningful discussion, involving the presenter and teachers from around the world.

After the event, the forum discussion will take on a life of its own and teachers will be encouraged to continue posting their experiences, reflections and questions related to the topic of the webinar. So, if you feel strongly about the topic, we will make it possible for you to take the discussion beyond the scheduled workshop and continue sharing your ideas with like-minded teachers and teacher trainers from other countries

This workshop was fantastic. Very informative and engaging. Sophie and the panel seemed very knowledgeable and experienced and delivered the workshop in a very friendly, yet professional way. I love how specific examples were given to teach literacy using differentiation. I have already started using some of the techniques I have learned with one of my online students and have signed up for another workshop!

Excellent guidelines and very engaging workshop. Sophie kept me thinking during the entire session. She delivered clear explanations and provided us with a wide scope of suggestions and ideas to implement when dealing with literacy in the classroom. Thank you ever so much.

New topic to think about

I honestly didn’t think before about any of the topics that Sophie presented in this workshop, and I am telling it with a bit of shame, because she was right about everything. The good thing is that from now on I will pay a lot more attention to literacy and all of the difficulties of my students, as well as increasing the exercises focused on helping them to improve this aspect of language learning.
Also, Sophie made a very good point about students that have high proficiency in oral skills, but are lacking written skills and how to deal with that.
