Introduction
When we are asked to tutor a new student, or group of students, for the IELTS exam it can feel that the stakes are very high to prepare and deliver the very best lessons to provide all the tools required to succeed in this important examination.
However, taking the right first step on this study journey is essential to set our students on the correct path and this is why carrying out an effective initial assessment is absolutely vital. For new(er) teachers creating and performing IELTS initial assessments can be daunting as you may feel you lack the knowledge and the skills.
In this workshop we will unpack the initial assessment process, starting off by considering what an assessment actually is and why it is such an important element of the study journey. Next, we will explore some concrete strategies for how to conduct the assessment with some crucial dos and don’ts. Finally, we will share our pro tips on how to set realistic expectations both for the student and the teacher, mapping out achievable learning goals for all stakeholders. Our aim is to give new and experienced teachers of English the confidence to accurately assess students to be able to lay solid foundations for their future IELTS course.

Preparing for the Workshop
Our Masterclass workshops are typically delivered in 90 mins.
At Gallery Teachers, we endorse the philosophy of building on your previous knowledge and experience as opposed to just imparting knowledge on you.
Therefore, in order to prepare you for the webinar and help you activate what you already know about the topic, we will suggest two to four reflective questions for you to consider before you join the event.
You will also be given the opportunity to post your reflections, along with any questions you may already have at the pre-watching stage, to the discussion forum.
The reflective questions, as well as ideas and shared experiences posted to the forum by attendees, will be used in the real-time Q&A session in order to generate an engaging and meaningful discussion, involving the presenter and teachers from around the world.
After the event, the forum discussion will take on a life of its own and teachers will be encouraged to continue posting their experiences, reflections and questions related to the topic of the webinar. So, if you feel strongly about the topic, we will make it possible for you to take the discussion beyond the scheduled workshop and continue sharing your ideas with like-minded teachers and teacher trainers from other countries

Honesty with students
Excellent presentation skills . I love your ingredients and I agree teachers should encourage and motivate their learners but be honest with their progress .
Effective IELTS Assessment
This was a very intersting talk on how to make an effective initial assessment of a student’s abilities. I liked Nicky’s emphasis on being frank (though always with tact and sensitivity) to students about their possibilities for improvement given their resources, like current ability, time available, etc. I found her practical advice on how not to frighten students with the assessment to be spot on.
How to Conduct an Effective Initial Assessment for IELTS Students
A very interesting workshop and very helpful to know more about how to assess IELTS Students, but also about others essential aspects needed to be able to carry out these assessments objectively and generously.
