Introduction

As a fluent speaker of the language, it is only natural to you to be grammatically correct, but how successfully do you think you could explain certain elements of English grammar to a learner?

This Language Awareness and Grammar Module has been created to help you refresh or, perhaps, if you are a native speaker, for the first time in your life, learn about English grammar.

While this Language Awareness and Grammar course was prepared to accompany our TEFL course for those who are training to become English language teachers, it actually can benefit anyone including those who are studying English as a foreign language.

If you are training to become an English teacher, starting with this course is not mandatory; however we recommend completing it prior to the start of the Teaching Grammar module.

The TEFL course is a teaching methodology programme, not a language course; therefore, there will be no explicit grammar teaching during the course. There will, however, be references to grammar terminology and concepts throughout the course, particularly in the Teaching Grammar Module. The Language Awareness and Grammar course will give you an overview of grammar and help you understand the important grammar points in order to prepare you for the course.

Course Aims & Objectives

  • To equip you with sufficient  knowledge of English grammar
  • To prepare you for the Teaching Grammar Module in our main TEFL Course, in which you will learn how to apply your knowledge of grammar to teaching it in a communicative way
  • To introduce you to the terminology used in an EFL classroom

Teaching English abroad is an awesome way to have a life-changing adventure living in a foreign country. While teaching online gives you the freedom to teach English language learners without being tied down to one place.

Course Structure

The Language Awareness and Grammar Course consists of about 20 hours of online content divided into thirteen lessons, covering key areas of English grammar as well as an end of course test.

The table of content below presents a directory of all of the lessons included in the course, giving you a clear understanding of how it is structured. It will also serve as your navigation tool to quickly access  lessons and keep track of your progress.

Each lesson starts with the learning objectives so that you know exactly what you can expect to learn. There are a variety of tasks throughout the course; some are based on text, some on audio recordings and some on visuals. The tasks in the lessons are designed to be interactive. Through the application of Guided Discovery, information is elicited to engage you as the trainee teacher, as opposed to getting you to learn through reading lengthy texts. The same teaching and learning technique is used in the main TEFL course.

Each task provides answers and Trainer’s Commentary, with the intention to help you understand and reflect on what the task teaches you. The Commentary will also help organise your knowledge by summarising the main points from each lesson.

At the end of certain lessons, you are also encouraged to post your ideas related to the topic of the lessons, using our online TEFL Forum as well as to comment on other participants’ posts. While it is not assessed, we highly recommend that you should complete it.’ When you reach the end of the course, you will be given an End of Course Test with a variety of tasks including multiple-choice questions, gap fill and true or false questions. The aim of the End of Course Test is to help you clarify what you have learned in each lesson. The pass rate for the test is 70%. You can retake the test as many times as you need in order to pass it.

Experiencing teachers and their career advancement.

1st March 2023

The job of a teacher is extremely rewarding since it gives the opportunity of becoming part of a person’s life and imprint in his mind the knowledge that will allow him achieve greater goals. It is a two-way process in which both, teacher and students, have the opportunity to learn from each other.

During my teaching practice, my students taught me that each one learns differently and has a different capacity to process and apply information. Therefore, different activities and methods should be used during class time. Their commitment to learn a second language coming so early every day, with a positive attitude, also taught me that there is no obstacle when you have a genuine desire to achieve something.
