GuestMath is a subject that gives chills to most of the students. While some face trouble understanding the steps on how to solve numerical problems, many fail to grasp the concepts all together.
Learners are troubled with several math struggles – giving rise to questions like “What is the next step?”,”How should I apply the formula here?”, and so much more. It’s safe to say that math is not easy to understand or crack. A lot of effort, focus and dedication is required.
Moreover, students first need to understand where they are struggling and how to overcome it respectively. So, to those students struggling with math and to those teachers who want to help learners understand math, here are 3 reasons why students are facing so many challenges and how you, as a teacher, can aid in overcoming them.
1) Teach The Basics
Problem:
Students struggling with math often make silly mistakes because their basics are not clear. This leads to learners wasting too much time on easy questions during exams which could’ve been channeled towards answering tricky, hard questions. Eventually, this mismanagement of time catches up to them and students miss out on completing the paper on time.
Solution:
Many teachers run special, extra lectures to brush up students’ math basics. Some educators give practical demonstrations or other references to help learners understand basics in-depth. You can create your own solution as long as learners bothered with math struggles feel confident and at ease while solving easy, basic math problems.
2) Address the Low Attention Span
Problem:
Teachers often fail to notice that learners feel disconnected with what is being taught during the lectures. The primary reason being the low attention span. As a result, students don’t grasp the topic properly. This leaves them with many unresolved doubts.
Solution:
To resolve the challenges of students struggling with math, teachers need to come up with new ways to make lectures interesting. Conduct live quizzes, use ppts and videos during classes, stimulate students minds with educational games, provide timely breaks, and more. Keep learners hooked into the lectures from the get go. You’ll automatically see their interest levels rising up, eventually leading them to understand concepts in-depth.
3) Focus on Practice
Problem:
Math is a subject that demands practice. Learning or memorizing formulas is ineffective. Since all other subjects don’t require such high practice time, students procrastinate and avoid practicing numericals as much as possible. Thus, leading them to forgetting a freshly learned concept almost instantly.
Solution:
To tackle math struggles from a classroom level, teachers can start off a lecture by revisiting and jogging students’ memories as to what they learned in the last sessions. Moreover, creating short yet effective assignments can do wonders for students practicing skills. Even during lectures, keep learners engaged and ask them to solve a numerical problem along with you. These 3 ways will assist you in tackling all the students’ math struggles effectively. GuestGreat topic. When I was a student, math was my most unlikely subject. Of course, you need to concentrate your attention on the main things.
It is easier if you turned off your phones from notifications and nothing can distract you. Also, you can come up with rewards. For instance, if you learned one rule, you can take one candy. It is easier to learn nowadays because students have helping sources. You can read more here.
