We bought a small rancher near Midtown last spring and knew the kitchen and hall bath needed work, but I didn’t expect the quote process to be this messy. First guy was super friendly, promised a detailed estimate, then went silent for two weeks. Second one showed up late, eyeballed everything, and sent a number that felt like he just made it up on the drive home. Third actually seemed organized and gave us a line by line breakdown, but his schedule was booked out almost five months. I get that everyone is busy, but it’s frustrating because we’re not trying to build a mansion, just update a dated kitchen and a bathroom that has seen better days. A coworker told me she had good luck with a licensed general contractor for home remodeling in Palo Alto, and now I’m wondering if that’s the route I should focus on instead of chasing handymen or design build firms that won’t return calls. For anyone who’s been through this around here, how did you filter out the flakes? Did you care more about license checks, reviews, or just who could start soonest? I’m honestly tempted to just pick the one who communicates the best and hope for the best.
