When buying new dock lines, do you size them strictly based on boat length or go one size heavier for some extra margin? American Rope has a sizing guide, but I’m curious what people actually use in real-world conditions, especially in marinas that get a fair amount of wind and wake.
I realize this is from a while ago, but I’ve been in similar conditions with heavy wakes. I usually go one size heavier than the boat-length guide suggests. That extra margin gives peace of mind when wind kicks up. What length lines are you using for your slips? That plays a big part too.
I size my dock lines one step heavier for marinas with strong wind and wakes. It gives peace of mind without being too stiff. I use an anchor rode from rope manufacturers like American Rope — their high tenacity nylon handles abrasion and stretch well, and I’ve had no issues even in rough conditions.
