I agree that a strict loss limit is key, but for me the rule is to leave the debit card at home and only take cash. That way I physically can’t overspend

I focus on value and condition first. For popular players, even mid-grade cards can be worth submitting
I send my best finds through a hobby store that runs regular PSA and BGS submissions, which saves me shipping hassle and gives me bulk rates
Their team also helps me evaluate borderline cards before I pay
