This module was a good challenge! It opened my eyes to the differences in teaching and specially it helped me understand how to better plan a listening activity.

I liked all the tips, the ones I’ve found to be more useful are:
‘Choose a text your students will be interested in.’ – Choosing a text that gets the interest of the students it’s quite important. Knowing what could get the students attention is already a winning way of starting a reading lesson.
‘Pre-teach lexis will help students’ comprehension, but do not go overboard.’ – Knowing in advance the meaning of the words gives the student the needed confidence to approach the reading task. If we give too much information, or too many explanations , there’s the risk the student will get bored and confused, losing interest on the task.
‘Encourage students to deduce meaning from context.’ – Instead of offering the answers straightaway, we engage the student in order for them to arrive to a conclusion by themselves. This way the learning process becomes active too, maintaining the level of interest high.

Teaching grammar is often a challenge, for me. In this course, grammar is explained in an easy way, making connecting with the students more fluid. I will try to use the same clear and simple approach in my classroom.

This module was quite helpful and informative. I have learned many new things, as like language skills and systems and all the different roles a teacher has in the classroom. This module also helped me reconsider my teaching methodology and one thing I’ll do from now on is a student led lesson with an engaging lead-in.

      Hannah’s teaching material – Lead-in
. Divide the class into groups
. Write the word LIFE on the board
. Show students pictures representing different stages of life (birth, marriage, death).
. Ask students what do these pictures represent and to give examples of events in their own lives (ex.: birth of a sibbling, sister’s wedding, etc)
